BAD experience at Restaurant in Medford!

I learned a disturbing incident last night at the Suffolk County Celiac Support Group meeting... A fellow Celiac went to KINGS BUFFET, at 3251 Horseblock Road, in Medford recently with her husband and daughter. She was aware that she could not eat anything there, but because her daughter (who is 8) really wanted to go, they decided to go, and Mom would "sit" there to be with them while they enjoyed the meal. When they walked in, they explained that there would be 1 adult, and 1 child eating, and that the Mom would NOT be eating, and that it was because she COULDN'T eat anything, and the manager/owner (?) refused to let her in. When the Mom explained that she had Celiac Disease, and that she would get very sick if she ate anything there, and to "trust her" she was NOT eating there, and not trying to "gain free entry to eat", the woman still refused to let her in, and told her she had to sit outside and wait for them. So pass the word around to your friends, Celiacs or not, to not patron KINGS BUFFET in Medford.

HOW HORRIBLE!

Gluten Free Long Island Website name- TAKEN!

OK- so I was making a website dedicated to all that is gluten free on Long Island, and I finally was ready to "purchase" the domain name, after many months of debate... I wanted it to be the same name as my blog : "glutenfreelongisland.com " and when I started "checking" the domain pricing out a few months ago, www. glutenfreelongisland . com WAS available! I went to buy it today, and someone had bought it!!! Oh well,
So now I had to change the name of the site- so I will not have: www.GlutenFreeLI.com so be on the lookout for it!

Mr. Miceli's in RVC has Gluten Free options!

Mr. Miceli’s Pizzeria in Rockville Centre offers GLUTEN FREE items! According to the menu on the website PointClickEat (type 11570 as the zip and find “Mr. Miceli” for their menu) All of their dishes are available as gluten free & wheat free options with Glutino products (except sandwiches and calzones). I got Chicken Parm with GF Angel Hair Pasta- It was the BEST GF Chicken Parm I have ever had! It tasted just like I remember it used to taste with wheat bread crumbs! The owner has a Wheat Allergy (not Celiac), but was very knowledgeable in cross contamination issues, and said that he is looking to expand the restaurant in about a year to make one side of it ALL gluten free items!

Mr Miceli’s Pizza is located at:

19 North Park Avenue Rockville Centre, NY 11570 (516) 764-7701

If you visit, tell him Sue told you about it!

Smokin Sloes Southern BBQ- Gluten Free Menu!

Smokin Sloes Southern BBQ in Northport- Now offers a Gluten Free Menu!
I went there this weekend, and was amazed by the choices! They just had GF menus printed up to make ordering easier, and the owner was very friendly and when speaking to him about the GF menu, and explaining how the corn bread can NOT go on my plate, he said that they are working on a button in the computer to alert the staff to someone who is eating GF (although, the corn breads were all each individually wrapped, which was a plus to limit the contamination), but I thought it was great that he was bein pro-active. I mentioned to him about the GFRAP, so hopefully he will want to become a part of it so that he becomes more educated in cross-contamination issues! It was a great change of pace to be able to eat somewhere "different".

Gluten Free Passover products at Shop Rite in Plainview!

I have to give my shout outs to http://www.glutenfreenyc.blogspot.com/ for posting about ShopRite of Morton Village in Plainview, on South Oyster Bay Road!!! I had to post this as well, because I didn't want anyone to miss out!
I had shopped there last year, but THIS YEAR they have tons of more gluten free passover products, I almost fell over in the aisle! I was so excited to see a huge gluten free apple pie, the frozen mini eclairs, black and white cookies, rainbow cookies (Fabulous), and some other gluten free products such as the Dr. Pragers potato Littles, the Bell and Evans GF chicken fingers/chicken nuggets and GF passover pizza!
I spent over $120 in GF foods!!!
You need to visit http://www.glutenfreenyc.blogspot.com/ for awesome pictures and a FULL description of all that Shop Rite in Plainview has to offer!

Q & A

Below are some questions that I have received....
(q) Sue, fellow Celiac person. I'm tired of paying $6.00 for a one pound box of gluten free pasta. Any suggestions where to shop on the Island to buy pasta, etc. at reasonable prices? Thank you,
(a)

I have found the Brown Rice Pasta at Trader Joes (various locations in Nassau/Suffolk) to be very reasonable (I believe around $2.50 for 1 lb bag... but I will check that out next time I am there), and The Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta (16 oz as well ) was on sale for $2.46 (I believe it is a "permanent" sale) at B Well Naturally in Plainview... every time I go there I get that price. I know it's not a .99 cents on sale of Ronzoni Pasta, but like you, when you're used to paying $6, I get excited when it's "only" $2.50.

Rice Chex is now Gluten Free!

Thanks General Mills!!!
Rice Chex Cereal is now Gluten Free!

http://www.bellinstitute.com/stream_document.aspx?rRID=6219&pRID=6173

UPDATE: MAKE SURE TO READ THE LABEL! I went to the store today, and the Rice Chex still contained Barley Malt Flavor! The new boxes are not in all stores yet! Make sure it is the one pictured in the link above (that says "Gluten Free" on the front of the box) and of course always READ every label! . I found out that it's only the 12.8 size box manufactured after Feb 1, 2008. There will be 3 check marks on the box. One of them stating gluten free. As with all reformulated products, both the old and new products may be on store shelves at the same time so please read labels/packaging carefully.

5/13/08
I also e-mailed the Reps from GM- regarding the New formula for Berry Berry Kix, that does not contain gluten, but is not labled "Gluten Free"... this was the response:
5/13/08

" Dear Valued Consumer:

Thank you for contacting General Mills regarding gluten in Berry Berry Kix cereal and Rice Chex cereal.

Rice Chex has been reformulated to insure that it does not include gluten-containing ingredients or have the possibility of cross contact with gluten containing ingredients or products. The malt syrup ingredient was removed. As with all reformulated products, both products may be on store shelves at the same time so consumers are encouraged to read labels/packaging carefully.

There are no immediate plans for additional gluten-free labeled cereals.
It is our goal to help our consumers determine whether or not they can include our products in their diet. To accurately accomplish this, we believe it is best to refer to the specific ingredients listed on each product package.

However, we do understand that ingredients can be confusing, so we want to assure you if the ingredient label does not list wheat, barley, rye, oats or gluten containing ingredients sourced from these grains, then the product would be gluten-free. Sources of gluten are listed on the label even if the source of gluten is part of another ingredient (such as flavoring or spice). Because ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation, you should use the product's ingredient label to provide you with current and accurate information. "
